The Four Figures of the Old Testament

While any simplification may lead to distortion, failure to present things in a simple matter can lead to intellectual fog. Let me suggest that the Bible presents us with four key persons: Abraham, Moses, David and Elijah. Interesting in their own right, these four also represent four different groups or issues: the patriarchs, the law (torah), the kings and the prophets (neviim). They also illustrate an important feature of the Bible, namely, that it is a story of God’s interaction with definite historical persons. Let us listen for a moment to what Jesus says about them:

Your father Abraham rejoiced that he might see my day. He saw it and was glad… I solemnly declare it: before Abraham was, I AM. (Jn 8:58)

Moses comes often on the lips of Jesus. Here is but one example:

As Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that all who believe may have eternal life in him. (Jn 3:14-15)
