Judaism in the New Testament

That Jesus was Jewish is an indisputable fact. Jewish religion and culture shaped his whole way of thinking, praying and acting. His first followers were also all Jewish, although the New Testament records a few encounters with non-Jews such as a Syro-Phonecian woman and a Roman centurion. The Gospels also record Jesus’ message to “go out to the whole world” and very early in the proclamation of the Gospel, the Church reached out to non-Jews, particularly through the initiatives of Paul and Barnabas. Yet, the New Testament also records opposition between Jesus and various groups including Pharisees, Sadducees, King Herod and the ‘Jews’ (where the term seems to mean the elite of Judaea itself). It is this material which was later used to justify a variety of false accusations made against the Jews in general and which thus sets the scene for the prevailing negative relationship between Judaism and Christianity until very recent times.
This chapter will review all these passages of Scripture in the light of our present understanding. First, though, I will present a simple summary of Jewish belief as found in the Old Testament.
